Menopause Facts

Menopause Facts
One menopause fact is that it occurs naturally as a part of the aging process and therefore it cannot be prevented. This condition occurs when a woman’s body no longer releases eggs and the ovaries significantly reduce the production of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. A woman is only considered menopausal when she goes for 12 consecutive months without having a menstrual period. Another fact is that this condition normally occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 although sometimes it can come earlier or later. When this condition occurs naturally, it is usually preceded by a transition period referred to as perimenopause. This transition period is characterized by irregular periods.
Although perimenopause normally begins in the mid to the late 30s, it can also begin anytime between a woman’s early 30 and the late 50s. Another menopause fact is that the related symptoms usually occur because of the absence of the eggs as well as the reduction in the levels of estrogen and progesterone.
Common symptoms of this condition include hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. Other symptoms include mood changes, urinary problems and lack of interest in sex. A woman may also experience memory or concentration problems as well as changes in physical appearance.
Another fact is that hormone replacement therapy or HRT is the most common and usually the most effective way to relive the menopausal symptoms. This condition can also be induced by an operation that removes the uterus and the ovaries. The symptoms normally begin immediately after the surgery and are normally more intense.
